City of Meridian issued the following announcement on May 24.
Meridian Fire Station Seven (7) broke ground today, May 24, located at 2385 E. Lake Hazel Rd. Meridian, ID 83642. The new fire station will improve response times in Southeast Meridian and is expected to be fully operational by Fall 2023.
“Emergency services and public safety are at the forefront of what will make Meridian the West’s premier place to live, work, and raise a family,” said Fire Chief Kris Blume. “Public safety services create an atmosphere that is conducive to investment and growth.”
This 11,560 square foot facility is built with the health of firefighters in mind. The layout of the fire station allows for better ventilation, isolated areas for contaminated gear, and easy access to the fire engine. Solid surface flooring throughout living quarters reduces exposure to hazards from firefighter boots and shoes. In addition, there are sinks at each entry to the living quarters from the bay, preventing cross transfer to skin following fire exposure. By seeking out innovative safety methods for their fire stations, Meridian Fire Department is better able to minimize controllable hazards encountered by the firefighters living in them.
Fire Station Seven (7) is being built on land provided by the Meridian Rural Fire Protection District.
“The Meridian Rural Fire Protection District has been a proud partner with the City of Meridian for many years,” said District Commissioner Randy Howell. “The land we are standing on today, was purchased by our district five years ago in anticipation of the day that we would need it. That day has arrived and we are happy to have been able to anticipate and have this site ready to put a new fire station on. We will continue to partner with the city to make sure that residents have access to the best possible services.”
With the approval of Fiscal Year 2023 budget, the Meridian Fire Department plans to begin hiring firefighters for the new fire stations in October 2022. Meridian Fire Department would like to thank all of the attendees from today’s event including Mayor Robert Simison, Rural Fire Protection District Commissioner Randy Howell, Meridian City Council, and members of media and public.
