U.S. Congressman Russ Fulcher of Idaho has announced that Congresswoman Susie Lee from Nevada will co-lead the bipartisan Committing Leases for Energy Access Now (CLEAN) Act. This bill, identified as H.R. 1687, previously passed in the House of Representatives during the 118th Congress with bipartisan support. It aims to boost domestic power production and diversify the United States' energy portfolio.
Congressman Fulcher emphasized the significance of geothermal energy, describing it as "a powerful source of clean, safe, and dependable energy." He highlighted that the CLEAN Act is designed to streamline processes related to geothermal exploration and development on federal lands. "I am glad to welcome Congresswoman Lee as a co-lead on this vital effort," he said.
The Department of Energy reports that the U.S. leads globally in geothermal electricity-generating capacity, with over four gigawatts—enough to supply power to about three million homes across the country.
Congresswoman Lee expressed her commitment by stating, "Here in Nevada and across the nation, geothermal is a promising and proven 24/7 clean energy source with immense potential for further growth." She stressed that supporting this act would help lower energy costs while promoting environmental protection and advancing American energy independence.
Fulcher introduced this legislation in February. For projects to develop geothermal resources on federally controlled lands, acquiring leases is essential due to their role in facilitating expansion efforts. The current lack of leasing opportunities combined with slow permitting processes results in extended timelines compared to other energy projects.
The CLEAN Act proposes amendments to the Geothermal Steam Act of 1970 aimed at addressing these challenges.
