MERIDIAN – The City of Meridian is pleased to announce the official opening of two new flag disposal collection boxes, located at Meridian Fire Station One (540 E Franklin Rd., Meridian, ID 83642) and Meridian Fire Station Five (6001 N Linder Rd., Meridian, ID 83646). The launch will be celebrated on Friday, July 7th at 9 am with a ribbon cutting ceremony at Meridian Fire Station One. This public event will include members of the Legion Post, Meridian’s first responders, and Mayor Robert Simison.

This project is made possible through funds Meridian City Council approved as a grant to the American Legion Post 113, through the city’s Neighborhood Grant Program. The American Legion Post 113 partnered with the Idaho Department of Correction and American Legion Post 201 to develop a new flag collection and disposal program in Meridian. The project aims to collect, properly dispose of, and recycle American flags in an effort to honor our nation's proud history and serve those who have selflessly served us.

“I want to say thank you to the American Legion for identifying the need for the collection boxes in Meridian,” said Meridian Mayor Robert Simison. “Through their leadership, we are helping ensure the proper disposal of American flags which is a sign of respect for the country, and for those who have fought and sacrificed for it.”

The event on July 7th will begin at 9am with a welcome and introductions. The ceremony will include posting of colors, an invocation, and the pledge of allegiance. Remarks will be made by the Legion Commander and Mayor Simison. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will follow with the participation of Legion members, Meridian first responders, and the Idaho Department of Corrections. Mayor Simison will donate the first flag, and the ceremony will end with opportunities for pictures and interviews.

More information about the Meridian Flag Disposal Collection Program can be found within Mayor Simison’s recent blog post, here.
