Meridian Firefighters Raise Funds for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Firefighter Stair Climb
MERIDIAN- Meridian Firefighters will be at the Dutch Bros Coffee on Overland (2170 E. Overland Rd.) on Friday, March 3, 2023 from 8am to Noon, where one dollar from every drink purchased will be donated for the 32nd annual Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Firefighter Stair Climb. Patrons will see participating firefighters on-site training on a stair climber in full gear.
Eleven (11) Meridian Firefighters from the Meridian Local #4627 are raising money and training for the LLS Firefighter Stair Climb, scheduled for Sunday, March 12th, 2023 in Seattle. In preparation for the event in March, Meridian firefighters are spending their days off training on the nineteen (19) flights of stairs at the US Bank Building in Boise (101 S. Capitol Blvd.). In comparison, participating firefighters will be climbing sixty-nine (69) flights in seventy (70) pounds worth of gear, up the Columbia Center; the tallest building West of the Mississippi.
Entering his 13th year participating, Captain Grant Hamilton emphasized the importance of raising awareness for cancer. "This fundraiser is one of the biggest fundraisers for the LLS and we climb to help find a cure and for all patients battling cancer. Each of us have our reasons to climb; I climb for my sister who lost her battle with Leukemia when she was 9. Many climb because firefighters are at an increased risk for cancer due to smoke and hazardous materials we are exposed to at work. It is important to the Meridian Local #4627 to raise awareness for cancer risk as well as support groups such as LLS in seeking a cure. We are thankful for the generosity of our community in helping us meet this year’s fundraising goal of $10,000."
