Meridian City Council Member and State Senator-Elect to Resign Council Seat, City Looks to Fill Seat

Senator-Elect Treg Bernt announced his intention to resign from Meridian City Council seat four, effective December 31st, to focus his efforts on the State Legislature as the next State District 21 Senator.

“I am committed to the State and my role as Senator to best serve the interests of Meridian,” said Bernt. “As District 21 Senator, I will still be representing Meridian and carrying the voice of my constituents to the State House, and look forward to continuing to advocate for the Meridian community.”

With Bernt’s resignation, Mayor Simison is currently accepting letters of interest to fill the vacancy on the Meridian City Council. In accordance with State law and City Code, Mayor Simison will appoint, with the approval of the City Council, an individual to fill the City Council seat until the next general city election, in November 2023.

“First, I want to thank and share my appreciation for the time and dedication Treg has provided the City of Meridian, and I believe he will continue to do the same at the State level now” said Mayor Robert Simison. “As we look to the future of our community, I will be reviewing all letters of interest to find someone who will serve our community and work to address the challenges we face with growth, transportation, and education.”

Interested residents must be qualified electors of Meridian and residents of District 4, meaning they must reside within District 4 boundaries at the time of the appointment. Those interested must also be at least 18 years of age and U.S. citizens. More details about qualifications are provided in Meridian City Code Section 1-7-2. Interested parties can look at what district they reside in by accessing the City Council Districting page.

If interested and qualified, please complete, sign, and deliver a resume and letter of interest to the City Clerk’s Office. These materials may be submitted in-person, by mail, or electronically. Please note that because City Hall closes at 3pm November 23rd for the Thanksgiving Holiday, all in-person submissions will be accepted until 3:00pm, November 23rd. Mailed submissions need to be post marked no later than November 23rd and addressed to 33 E. Broadway Avenue, Ste #300, Meridian, ID 83642. Electronic submissions must be emailed to cityclerk@meridiancity.org no later than November 23rd by 5:00pm. Letters of interest need to contain qualifying elector information including age and resident address. Individuals should be advised that information submitted to the City Clerk’s Office is considered a public record, and subject to disclosure if requested.
