City of Meridian issued the following announcement on May 11.
Residents are invited to learn about Meridian’s districting process and provide feedback to the Meridian Districting Committee on Friday, May 20th, 10:00a.m. and Thursday, June 9th 6:00p.m., at Meridian City Hall, City Council Chambers.
At these public hearings, the Meridian Districting Committee will explain the process used to create the proposed map, the factors that impacted their recommendation, and hear from the public regarding the proposed districts. The newly drawn districts will impact local elections beginning with the 2023 city elections.
The city’s six City Council districts are being created to reflect the 2020 U.S. Census figures. Election districts are redrawn every 10 years after the Census Bureau conducts its population count. According to the Census Bureau, Meridian’s overall population has increased to 117,635, requiring the City to develop Council districts. The Meridian Districting Committee’s goal is to ensure that each of the City Council’s six districts has as close to the same number of people as possible and meets the requirements of Meridian City Code. Given the city’s new population count, the ideal average population per City Council district is 19,606.
Members of the public are welcome to participate in the public hearings either in-person or virtually via Zoom. Residents are also encouraged to submit written comments in advance of the public hearing, either in-person, by postal mail, or via email to comment@meridiancity.org. The public hearings will also be live streamed and recorded. To access the live stream, visit www.meridiancity.org/live.
